Motorola Wearables Concept Case Study

Challenge

Mobile devices fight for space in our pockets, each contributing its "must-have" purpose, as well as a lot of feature overlap. MP3 players display appointments. PDAs play music. Phones take pictures. Ideally, there would be a streamlined system of hardware/software gateways that all communicate with one another, while effortlessly living on the user's body as fashion.

Motorola, already a leader in integrated communications and embedded electronic solutions, wanted to create a family of fashionable, wearable devices representing the next generation of personal computing and wireless communications. The challenge was helping them define what the system could be.

Process

Analysis Becomes Insight

The driving force was to create a meaningful experience in a technology-filled world by giving users full access to communications that augment their unique lifestyle. The result: a series of cutting-edge accessories that are stylish, intuitive, and function seamlessly together.

Concept Becomes Ideas

The accessories developed include eyewear, ear buds, a digital camera, pen, wristband, and a handheld. Each product was designed to function alone and link together wirelessly as a system, providing unprecedented user interaction.

Pervasive-computing research at MIT Media Lab laid the groundwork and the integrated technologies of Motorola's iDEN® provided firepower for the futuristic devices.

Ideas Become Reality

The ultramodern products use the latest advances in miniaturization and wireless connectivity technology to enable entertainment, business, and security-related communications and broadband applications. Each device has an independent power source and memory, and is designed to be worn as a fashionable accessory. The products operate together as a seamless personal device network that shares information and breaks out of today's world of heterogeneous devices.

Result

Inspired by the systems approach, many companies have begun to integrate different technologies in a very piecemeal fashion to achieve a personal device network. The Motorola Wearables System both demonstrates a vision of wearable wireless communication technology and makes a poignant statement. It represents a compelling and seamless completion of the communication circle.
